Funny Things

I believe that everyone should know themselves well and should acknowledge their weaknesses as well as their strengths.  I would like to publicly admit one of my weaknesses now:  I am not funny.  On the rare occasion I attempt humor, it is usually greeted with a groan, or in the case of a better joke, a slight chuckle and a shake of the head.  Sometimes a roll of the eyes.

Fortunately, however, I have been blessed with the talent of recognizing funniness in other people.  I would like to share the humor of some of those people with you now.

Michael Jr.
Not only is he funny, he's also using his humor to reach out to people who really need a laugh.  Check out the trailer for his documentary, Comedy: The Road Less Traveled on the site.  You can purchase your own copy here.

End of the World
Warning: not appropriate for children.  Not particularly enlightened or mature, but freaking hilarious nonetheless.

Cake Wrecks
This blog is devoted to cakes gone "horribly, hilariously wrong."  Usually ok for kids, and she gives you a warning before posts with more, uh, mature content.  (Disclaimer: Use of the word "mature" does not necessarily imply any actual maturity on the part of the blogger or the bakers of the cakes featured by said blogger.)

Bill Cosby
This is one of my favorite parts of Bill Cosby, Himself.  Enjoy.

Actually, the whole thing is my favorite part.  Want more?  Amazon has the whole thing here.

Keeping things brief...

Wow, 93 views this week!  I have to say, I'm impressed.  And I just have to give a shout-out to my reader in Singapore (Hi, how are things over there?) and to JohnFJackson, who linked to my blog on Twitter, even though I've never met him (Have fun in Vegas!).

So, the day is drawing to a close, and I'm leaving for dinner in a couple minutes, so I'll just leave you with a new song, just released on iTunes yesterday, from one of my favorite singers, the illustrious Josh Groban.  Enjoy!

Your Thoughts

So I asked my friends on Facebook what songs and music videos inspire them or just get them in a kick-ass mood.  I got quite the list...

"Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins. It's the song that can make anything cooler....anything!"
"Immediate Music- Inspiring, and it makes me feel like I have my own theme sons...
N'sync- Oh yes, I still listen to them and I'm not embarrassed, because it makes me feel nostalgic.
Appocolyptica- Again, ...very inspiring, an intense.
City and Colour- Usually only listen to it when I'm sad.
The Editors- A lot of their music is very touching for me.
Flobots- Very touching, very moving, and makes a lot of really good points.
Lady Sovereign- Just makes me feel cocky.
Mumford and Sons- They're just amazing all the way around!
Muse- Very moving, and the singer has a great voice.
Stephen Lynch- Always akes me laugh."
"You should look up Ray Lamontagne and the Pariah dogs if you haven't heard of them... They are my new fave."
"Oh,and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy! They're old school!"
And that was only three people.  Seriously.  And I didn't even put everything on here.

What songs put you in a great mood?

Beautiful, Beautiful Music

What noise could be more joyful than music?  What food does for the body, music does for the soul.  It gives us energy, sustains us through hardship, and affects the way we think and feel.  It can even save your life--it has mine.  Music has been around since before speech, and transcends time, culture, and language.  Some of my favorite songs are hundreds of years old and in languages I don't understand.

Like with food,  there are differences in taste.  Some people enjoy classical, some country, others hard rock.  Some people aren't picky and like a little of everything.  It doesn't make one genre better than another any more than it makes Thai food better than Italian; it's all a matter of opinion.  But, I really think there is some music that in the long term is ultimately toxic.  Like Oreos or fried chicken, these songs may feel good for now, but too much will make you sick.  I'm not singling out any particular style, because honestly, I've heard them in all genres.  There are songs out there that celebrate hatred, ignorance, and violence.  Not what I'd call a joyful noise.  Find the music that makes you feel whole and happy, whatever it may be.

Here are a few songs that really make me feel like I can do anything, be anyone, and have fun, all while keeping in mind what's really important.

Alicia Keys - Superwoman

I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas (I love this video, totally amazing!)

Lee Brice - Love Like Crazy

Jewel - Hands
Sorry, no embedding for this one, so you'll just have to click and go to YouTube for it. :)

So now I want to know how music has touched your life.  What touches your heart, inspires you to greatness, makes you want to dance, or just puts you in a great mood?

New Start, New Format

Starting today, I'm officially restarting this blog with a new format.  I'll be choosing a theme for the week, rather than the day, and I'll be writing at least every weekday, if not more often.  I'll still have occasional guest bloggers, but most of the posts will be by yours truly.  And as always, any questions, feedback, ideas or requests to be a guest blogger can be sent to me at heather.m.cornett@gmail.com
